Welcome to 7th grade Language Arts/Reading! This is going to be a 1 hour 30 minute block session in which we will cover reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, speaking, and writing! Don’t panic, the class will receive a break in between classes and other breaks as necessary. Although this is a demanding time on your brain, you will get out what you put in, so I encourage you to stay on task and challenge yourself daily.
As seventh graders I expect a greater maturity level than last year. That will show in your effort, sustained attention, and controlled emotions. I love to see enthusiasm and passion for reading and writing. What is important to you? Let me know (tactfully please...I am sensitive, too) what you think from time to time so we can make this time together interesting and productive. Let's have a great year!
The 7th grade language arts curriculum builds on the previous year’s content standards. These standards come directly from the Common Core Academic Standards for instruction. These standards are divided into 4 headings that drive instruction:
- Reading (Informational and Literary texts)
- Writing (Narrative, Informational/Explanatory, Argumentative, On Demand)
- Language (Grammar and Vocabulary acquisition)
- Speaking and Listening (Comprehension, Presentation, Public Speaking)
We will practice each of these skills daily.
Reading assignments/ Independent Reading Projects:
Students must read independently each night to build fluency and comprehension skills. Each student is expected to be reading one book at their reading level and interest per term outside of what is assigned in reading class. Students will have the opportunity to check these out through the library and will be encouraged to read these during down time during the day as well as S.S.R. in common time. A book report and AR test based on this book will be due at the end of each semester. There may be other outside assignments to complete as well. However, most work will be completed in class with appropriate use of work time.
