English Language Arts in the middle school follows the state Common Core Curriculum that the district has adopted. We do not use a daily textbook, rather we design and impliment materials to suit the needs of our current students. Our goal is to assist our students in grasping Common Core objectives, instill an appreciation of literature, and to show growth on standardized testing, while offering variety and choice to our ever-changing adolescent population. We do a variety of writing projects, review English fundamentals, read from numerous print sources, engage in speaking and discussion oportunites, and novel book studies.
Included in our curriculum:
- Three types of writing--Narrative, Informative, and Argumentive
- Grammar--parts of speech, punctuation, sentence structure and word usage
- Spelling and vocabulary
- Literature in multiple genres (fiction and nonfiction)
- Text--technical, informative, and narrative forms
Curricular sources include Scope Magazine, literature textbook, internet sources (Newsela, Tweentribune, Scholatic, etc), novel sets, teacher print resources, and teacher created materials.
